A league apart summary of season 1, episode 1

A league apart opens with a woman in a blue floral dress, wearing a hat, gloves and a single piece of luggage in her hand, trying to catch a train. The engine hasn’t started yet, but the horn is sounding and you can hear it all over Idaho. A couple stops him. A woman is standing with her husband, dressed in a military uniform, and his right arm is in a sling. It’s the middle of World War II, and the man is at home. The woman, somewhat stupidly, asks if she’s coming to the picnic and reminds her to bring the pie. Why would she ask her if she’s trying to catch a train? Either way, Mrs. Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobsen) promises to bring them even if she hops on that charcoal-guzzling vehicle heading for Chicago a moment later.

Carson will try out for the Women’s Professional Baseball Team (GPBL). When she arrives in the big city, she meets Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden) and Jo De Luca (Melanie Field). They also try and Carson accompanies them. Carson, a receiver, quickly made an impression by catching a foul ball off the field and a few yards into the stands. All in front of two businessmen operating the league and the media.

The latter is concerned that women act like men on the baseball field, and not like the women that society has taught them. One of those men is Marshall (Nathan Faxon), most likely inspired by Philip Wrigley, the man with a vision for the GBPL. The other is Morris Baker (Kevin Dunn), who feared that many would pay to watch women perform. They need income since the war has taken all their male players. That night, we find out that Carson left the house even though her boyfriend sent a letter that he would be back soon.

You will notice that all baseball players are white. Even though it’s all women, that doesn’t mean it’s inclusive. That’s when Max Chapman and his best friend, an aspiring comic book artist, Clance (Gbemisola lkumelo). Max, encouraged by her father, wants to try out the GPBL. However, when she approaches the field, three white men tell her that she is not allowed to do so. Max defiantly asks to try over Clance’s objections and tells him they should go home. Then, Max grabs a baseball and throws it from the outfield and into the stands. She has an arm that most male leaguers would envy. So they’re gonna give it a chance, right? No, they deny his talent because of the color of his skin.

The end

The next day, we learn that Carson, Greta and Jo are all part of the Rockford Peaches team. They celebrate that night and the five women cross paths at a local bar. Max and Clance run into her boyfriend in the kitchen, but Max gets upset when she finds out a waiter is giving a baseball tryout. She cools down in the backcourt. Meanwhile, Jo dances her version of the jitterbug while Greta and Carson have a heart-to-heart. Greta places her hand over his. Jo gives them a jealous look in his direction. Greta takes Carson to the back, where Max cools off, and kisses Carson, not realizing she’s there. However, she doesn’t pull away and the girl from Idaho kisses her back. Greta leaves, and Carson then sees Max come out of hiding. She has seen it all.

The show ends with Greta leaving with a man in a military uniform even though Carson suggests she’s not going with a man she just met. When she turns around, Max is back there in the alley.

Carsons says she’s the girl who was on trial. Max says yes but walks away.
