Yesteryear actress Juhi Chawla is back with a web series, Hush Hush, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. This crime thriller series also features some popular actresses like Karishma Tanna, Soha Ali Khan, Shahana Goswami, and Kritika Kamra in other pivotal roles. Let’s see how the show is.

Four friends Ishi Sangamitra (Juhi Chawla), Saiba Thomas (Soha Ali Khan), Dolly Dalal (Kritika Kamra) and Zaira Sheikh (Shahana Goswami) attend a big party thrown by Dolly’s in-laws. Ishi, who works at a PR agency, gets into a fight with a stranger outside the party venue. The stranger attempts to kill Ishi, but Dolly shoots him to save her friend’s life. Ishi promises her friends that she will take care of the murder issue and asks them not to worry about this incident. In a shocking storyline, Ishi kills himself the next morning. This leaves the other three puzzled and curious as to why Ishi killed himself. Geeta Tehlan (Karishma Tanna), a police officer, takes on the task of solving this highly publicized murder mystery. Who is this stranger? Why did he try to kill Ishi? Why did Ishi kill herself? How did the three friends get away with the murder? Watch the show to find out the answers.

Good points :

The show has an exciting and strong premise that starts quite well in the early episodes. The individual characters of these four female leads are well-written and have solid depth. Each character therefore has a subplot regarding their personal life and the drama thus created is interesting to watch.

Apart from the four friends, there are two other important characters in the series whose roles are well engraved. All the main actors gave compelling performances which add more value to the show.

The ending episodes are intriguing and captivating. The angle of investigation during these final episodes is fascinating. Ishi’s backstory is interesting and grabs our attention. It also brings an emotional edge to this crime thriller. There are a few placed twists that are just right.

Negative points :

We are shown that the four friends are very close to each other and are even ready to commit murder when one of them is in danger. But the complicity between these four characters is not well highlighted. Individually, the characters are well executed, but the show doesn’t show how they became friends.

In the urge to make a second season, the creators abruptly ended the series. The cliffhanger isn’t good, and it just feels like the story is stretched for no reason to make a sequel. The story could have been completed in a single season.

After a rather interesting start, the series runs out of steam in the middle of the episodes. The creators haven’t tried to explore the solid script present at hand. The length of the series adds to the flaws mentioned.

Technical aspects:

Background music by Arijit Datta is in keeping with the tone of the series. Shaz Mohammed’s camerawork is clever as it captures the dark atmosphere required for such a crime thriller. As said before, the editing team should have shortened the series to make it even better.

Three directors Tanuja Chandra, Kopal Naithani and Ashish Pandey ran the show and they fail to keep it together. Therefore, the show will be good in pieces and not exceed a certain measure. The creators should have been more vigilant in showing the attachment between the main cast and should have wrapped the series here in the first season itself.

Overall, Hush Hush has its highlights with decent twists and splendid performances from all the main cast. But the uneven execution, abrupt ending and pale mid-games make it a passable watch this weekend.
