CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) — Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are hoping to identify a man who was wearing an Amazon delivery uniform during an armed robbery.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 4 at the Skill Games arcade near the intersection of Valleydale Road and Summerville Road in northwest Charlotte.

Detective Rick Smith, CMPD’s Crime Stoppers Coordinator, explained that the man wore the uniform to enter the company.

“This particular business that you have to be allowed into, it may have been a ploy to impersonate a delivery person to gain access to it,” Smith explained.

Surveillance footage shows the man brandishing a weapon and grabbing an employee once he is at the business. Video footage shows the intruder taking the employee to the back of the arcade and collecting cash from the company’s back office.

Smith said it was surprising to see someone commit a brazen armed robbery in the middle of the day.

“It’s becoming more and more common,” the detective explained. “It was around 4 p.m. We had customers inside, so yeah, it’s a bit surprising, but nowadays people do and try anything.”

Surveillance footage shows the gunman in a delivery uniform leading the employee back into the business once the money has been collected from the back of the arcade. The video shows the man leaving the business with boxes full of cash.

Smith said no one in the arcade was seriously injured in the robbery.

“I’ve always said the only thing you can do is be very cooperative. Be as cooperative as possible, give the suspect what he wants and again we were lucky that no one in this circumstance was seriously injured,” the detective explained.

He said the man appeared to be wearing fake dreadlocks and a mask in addition to the Amazon uniform.

“We’re asking the public to take a look at the person or if you just have inside knowledge about it give us a call,” Smith said.

Branden Baribeau, an Amazon spokesperson, told WBTV that Amazon does not believe the intruder was someone who works for Amazon.

“Based on our preliminary review, we do not believe this individual is delivering for Amazon. We are continuing to review the information and will work with local law enforcement as they investigate,” Baribeau said.

Anyone with information about the armed robbery is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters can remain anonymous and they can receive a cash reward if they have information that leads to an arrest. Community members can also submit crime tips through the P3 Tips app.
