Season 4 of “True Detective” in preparation at HBO with Barry Jenkins

real detective is one step closer to an official return to HBO – without creator Nic Pizzolatto at the helm.

Sources say The Hollywood Reporter that the premium cable network recruited Issa Lopez (Tigers are not afraid, side effects) to write a script for a new cycle that has been doubled True Detective: Night Country. Additionally, Barry Jenkins is attached to executive produce the anthology. Should season four move forward — it’s currently in development — Lopez would direct the pilot in addition to serving as executive producer.

HBO declined to comment because the deals have yet to be made official. Season one stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to return as executive producers as they had on the previous three seasons of the Emmy-winning HBO show. Jenkins, who transferred his overall contract to HBO last April after a few years at Amazon, will produce through his Pastel banner with the company’s Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak also on board as an EP. Anonymous content will produce again.

Pizzolatto will also likely be credited as an executive producer, though he’s not supposed to be officially involved in a fourth season. Pizzolatto, who created the anthology, sources previously said THR in January 2020, the showrunner met with HBO executives and all parties agreed it was time to part ways. He signed his first global pact with HBO tied to the debut of real detective and renewed this agreement twice. HBO owns the rights to real detective and, since Pizzolatto’s departure, has left the door open to revisit the show with a new central writer and producer at the helm as it appears to explore different viewpoints. (Pizzolatto, since leaving HBO, has teamed up with McConaughey for the FX series Redeemer as part of an overall agreement with the cable company. The series did not move forward and Pizzolatto negotiated an early exit from his FX pact.)

News from the real detective the rebirth is not a surprise. HBO and HBO Max boss Casey Bloys said THR in February that “we developed various ideas” of the franchise.

Pizzolatto shot to fame after debuting the star-studded first season for HBO with 12 Emmy nominations. He won the Emmy for Writing as part of the show’s five wins for the first season. The franchise, across three seasons, has garnered over 20 nominations.

Jenkins, for his part, has spent years working on The Underground Railroad at Amazon as part of its first-look deal with the streamer. the Moonlight The Oscar-winning actor is replaced by CAA, Jewerl Ross and attorney Jamie Feldman.

Lopez, replaced by M88, Rand Holston and Hirsch Wallerstein, is an award-winning Mexican producer, screenwriter and director. She has developed projects with Guillermo Del Toro, Noah Hawley and Jason Blum.
