Aryna Sabalenka had a very turbulent 2022 season and the Belarusian continued that turbulent form at Roland Garros as she made the last 32 by the skin of her teeth. However, Sabalenka’s grit and mental toughness cannot be questioned and these qualities combined with experience will make her tough to beat as she looks to seal an unlikely place in the last 16.

Next up for Sabalenka is another big hitter Camille Giorgi who scored a very impressive victory in the last round against Yulia Putintseva. The Italian has won back-to-back matches for the first time at a WTA event since the Australian Open and is a player who loves big chances as she looks to make the second week of her most successful grand slam. weak on paper. The question is, can Giorgi keep it cool and score another big win?

It’s a game of fiery temper, big hits and big serves as both players like to dictate the tempo of rallies. Although Giorgi is the type of player who can capitalize on Sabalenka’s misadventures, the Belarusian will remain favorite for week two and her mental fortitude should see her through this game.

Prediction: Sabalenka in three sets.

Elena Rybakina [16] v Madison Keys [22] Fundamentals of H2H and matches

After a bad start to the season, Elena Rybakina has been in consistent form for the past few months and continues to win back-to-back matches at tournaments. The Kazakh has proven over the past two years that she has all the talent to beat anyone on the circuit. Moreover, Rybakina has the composure to match and enjoys doing well at Roland Garros as she targets another deep run in Paris this year.

Next for Rybakina is former semi-finalist Madison Keys who is having a much better 2022 season. The American reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and won a title in Adelaide. However, after a good tournament in Indian Wells, the American headed to Roland Garros with a victory in four tournaments but seemed to have stabilized the ship in Paris. Can Keys control her power and reach the last 16?

This is a match between two heavy hitters who are comfortable on red dirt and will enjoy the tactical battle over how to use their power. Rybakina has a slight edge going into this match given his pre-Roland Garros confidence, but this game will be decided by the slimmest of margins.

Prediction: Rybakina in three sets.

Daniel Medvedev We couldn’t have dreamed of a better Roland Garros so far with two straight wins putting it into the third round. It is only the Russian’s second tournament since hernia surgery and he has exceeded his own expectations as he seeks to earn ranking points on the board ahead of his absence from Wimbledon. After having innovated last year in Paris, Medvedev has a place in the semi-finals in his sights.

However Miomir Kecmanovic will look to derail that progress with the Serb having a breakthrough season this year. After reaching back-to-back quarter-finals in Indian Wells and Miami, the Serbian has continued that momentum in the clay-court swing as he finally looks to make his breakthrough at a grand slam. Can he continue his good season by completing the second week in Paris.

Kecmanovic should give Medvedev a proper test, especially in terms of stamina, as this is the Russian’s first proper test since hernia surgery. However, in a best-of-five-sets format, Medvedev should still prevail, with his defense and movement too good for Kecmanovic’s power.

Prediction: Medvedev in four sets.
