TP-Link Kasa starts offering HomeKit support

0

TP-Link’s Kasa smart home products generally support Google and Alexa, but not HomeKit. This may change. TP-Link recently began shipping smart plugs in the US that integrate with Apple’s smart home ecosystem. The Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim is now available in 4-packs, with 2-packs expected to ship later in 2022.

Bringing Kasa Smart Control support to HomeKit

The first product to ship from the company with HomeKit support, the Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim offers an easy way to start making your home smarter. You can plug any device, like a lamp or coffee maker, into the outlet to make it smart.

This means you can operate the light or other accessory from your device using voice commands or an app. You can also create automations to enable or disable the accessory under certain conditions. In the past, even that was limited to Alexa or the Hey Google Assistant.

Now the sockets also support HomeKit. This means you can add the smart plugs to the Home app on your iPhone. It also opens up the ability to control outlets remotely, if you have a HomeKit hub like a HomePod or Apple TV.

Monitor your device’s power consumption with Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim

In addition to bringing HomeKit support to its product family, the Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim also helps monitor your device’s power consumption. In real time, the outlets send data to your smart home controllers, allowing you to track exactly how much electricity this light is using.

Other features include grouping, so you can have one button or voice command to control many of your smart plugs at once. With Away Mode built into the Kasa Smart app, you can schedule the lights to turn on and off at random intervals while you’re on vacation. It helps make it feel like you’re at home, even when you’re away.

One thing I’ve discovered about smart plugs is that they often prevent you from using adjacent outlets in your electrical outlet. Smart outlets are often so tall that the other outlet is blocked. Kasa’s new design for its smart plug is smaller, leaving that extra outlet open for use.

The latest Kasa smart plug, offering HomeKit support, is listed as model EP25, so be sure to buy it. It is currently available at an MSRP of $49.99 for a 4-pack. In 4Q22, a 2-pack will be sold through Amazon with an MSRP of $29.99.
