Qualls was already a recognizable face when he shared lines with the cast of “The Big Bang Theory” because of a movie he had made a few years earlier. Qualls’ first acting credit went to his role as Jason in the TV miniseries ‘Mama Flora’s Family’ – but that’s not why he may seem so familiar. Qualls’ breakout role was that of clumsy college virgin Kyle in the film ‘Road Trip’ – an offbeat comedy that followed four college kids as they drove across country on a quest to retrieve a sex type. One of the movie’s characters accidentally sent a tape to his girlfriend that showed him dating another girl. If that doesn’t ring a bell, you might remember it as that movie where Tom Green puts a live mouse in his mouth.
Qualls plays a nerdy loner who’s only invited over so the other guys can use his car — during the trip, however, his character Kyle finally experiences a part of college life that his character was jealous of. The low-budget movie ended up exploding in theaters and becoming a “must-see” comedy as it stayed in the top five at the box office for almost a month – but after ‘Road Trip’ it would be some time before Qualls would return to the mainstream.
